Down in the canyon

Sunday, April 22nd, 2001

On the way back from class the day before, I took a little detour to Malibu State Park. It was gorgeous out there so I returned with Hui Chin the next day. A mildly cool day, we walked for a good 4 hours, stopping here and there to allow my feet the chance to mend themselves. We went in search of the Malibu Lake but gave up half way when we realized we would probably not make it there and back to the doughnut shop by 3.

What’s truly amazing about the Malibu State Park is that you’re walking at the base of several huge mountains that overlap each other. I think being at the base of the mountain is sometimes a lot cooler than being on the mountain itself because you can see how you compare in terms of size. You feel smothered, flanked by magnificence, almost insignificant, almost like a bead of sweat rolling down the cleavage of a large breasted woman.

Correcting my color correction

Saturday, April 21st, 2001

Today was the last Saturday of my 4 Saturday pre-press class. I learned a ton from the instructor who was an old school print guy. Things like masks, curves, channels and adjustment layers are just some of the things I’ve been real lazy to learn in my years of using photoshop and 10 minutes of instruction by this guy probably saved me hours of squinting at Photoshop Bible 6. The problem with learning new tricks is that you’d tend to carelessly use or abuse your new found skill. I can already foresee that in the weeks to come I’ll be making montages whenever and wherever possible… I’ll spend hours color correcting images that don’t need color correcting or don’t need color for that matter. Nonetheless, new knowledge will eventually become old knowledge and you’ll be a notch better than you were the day before.
