Of lions and mosquitoes
Wednesday, April 18th, 2007Some weird questions have been trickling in via email, stuff like if Sophie and I have been eaten by lions yet upon moving back to Malaysia. The answer is no. Only Sophie has.
Here’s a quick update for you guys. We took the first week off to travel to Taiping, Sophie’s very picturesque hometown at the foot of a lush green hill. Her Dad, just like me, is a big food person, and I ate my weight in food the week we were there. Despite all the eating, I think I may have actually lost weight.
While in Taiping, we ventured to Kuala Sepetang, a mangrove swamp reserve park which has a boardwalk built over the swamp for tourists. If you’re interested in donating to the starving mosquitos of Kuala Sepetang, they have these pretty neat wooden chalets by the boardwalk that you can rent for the night.
We both started work in our second week. Sophie still works remotely for TradeDoubler in the UK, and I’ve started work for my cousin’s online development agency as their creative lead. DCM is a small 10 person shop with about 15 pretty big clients; so work here moves at bullet pace. Office hours on a good day are 9am-8pm, but the day moves pretty quickly. I’m currently in charge of work for Ford, Intel, Al Rajhi Bank (world’s largest Islamic bank) and YTL (Malaysia’s largest luxury property developer). YTL owns an island called Pangkor Laut, which was actually voted as the number 1 travel destination in the world by Conde Nast.
Due to the nutsy pace at DCM, I’m considering just working half days and using the other half of the day to set up my own thing. Also wouldn’t mind being a full time cabana boy on Pangkor Laut.
On the home front, parents are doing well, and most of the time it’s nice to constantly be surrounded by friends and family. After being away for 12 years, we are undergoing some serious culture shock, and we still question if the US or UK will suit us better. Only time will tell.
I think our bodies have finally adjusted to the humidity. I remember feeling ultra sticky the first week we were here, and related it to how it must feel like to be a caramelised apple.
We are currently car shopping and house hunting. Land prices in the city have gotten a bit ridiculous so we may see if we can buy a dinky piece land and build a 17 storey house.
Well, I think that’s it. Oh, and one last thing. Except for the zoo, there are no lions in Malaysia.
